About Me

My Background

I grew up in Wisconsin loving both the outdoors and the city life.  I graduated from Milwaukee Lutheran High School and then attended small college in Iowa, earning a BA degree in biology education. My first ten years of teaching were in public high schools in the Milwaukee area.  I came to VA in 1999 to attend Regent University.  I earned my Masters of Divinity (MDIV) degree in 2002.  For six years I served on staff as an associate pastor of several churches in the Hampton Roads area to help lead and bring about changes in children's ministries and worship styles.

I re-entered the profession of education for the next 12 years at Kings Fork High School in Suffolk.  I  was chosen as one the initial staff to initiate the International Baccalaureate program at the school   I retired this past June, 2018 for the purpose of running for School Board.  I live in the Chuckatuck Borough with my wonderful husband, Lyle, and our fun-loving retriever, Lexi.    Together, we have 5 amazing children and 12 awesome grandchildren.

'Off the Clock '

I love playing piano and for a long time, my family was very involved in tennis. Both my son and daughter played great tennis and I played for many years on a club team.  I became certified as a tennis instructor and started a kids tennis Academy (ZOE Tennis) at Regent University in 2001. Tennis is a great, life-long sport.

I like to read historical fiction and listen to country western music.  I'm a bit of an educational news 'junky' and am always on the lookout for new and innovative educational ideas.

I lead professional development for Biology teachers at National Conferences for the educational outreach of the Howard Hughes Medical  Institute (HHMI).  Instructional development is a passion of mine.

My husband and I attend the contemporary service at Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Eclipse, VA. We both enjoy the freedom of contemporary worship at this service and the warm, family atmosphere of this Christian congregation.

Favorites ... and not.

IDEAS!  I love brainstorming ideas whether it be about education, biology, or decorating. Talking through ideas is my favorite form of social conversation. Then, to see good ideas implemented is a true joy, which often takes a lot of work, patience  and a lot of adjustments.

As a Christian, I love life and I have witnessed some pretty  sour 'lemon' moments  be turned  into some pretty  sweet lemonade.

My husband says that my favorite line is "Hey, I have an idea!"  My least favorite line, when working for change is:   "..because that is not how we've always done it."

From Former Students

"It is my honor to have had Mrs. Story as my teacher in high school. As a teacher, Mrs. Story was passionate about not only the content she was teaching and making learning engaging, but she also took every opportunity to teach valuable life lessons along the way. She truly recognized the impact an educator can have on their students and made sure to make the most of it. Furthermore, as a mentor, Mrs. Story helped to guide me in reaching my own dreams to become an educator including offering guidance and support throughout my journey. Now, as a role model, Mrs. Story continues to make an impact as her example sets the path for many educators, including myself, to emulate. Her commitment to building relationships with her students, implementing innovative and effective teaching strategies, encouraging her fellow educators, and all the while remaining a lifelong learner herself, are all traits that I hope to continue in my own career. Her perspective is unique and her voice is one that would be a valuable contribution to any team. It is because of her passion for education, dedication to growth and improvement, and determination to make a difference that I, without a doubt, support Sherri Story as candidate for School Board."

--Alexis Brueggeman,

Former IB Diploma Student

Chesapeake  Elementary Teacher

Mrs. Story was one of my first teachers in High School. Though she only taught me Biology, it was VERY apparent that she knew much more about education and teaching students than the average teacher. She has a very astonishing background and has a very unique, and in my opinion, useful idea for bettering the school system. She is a very cheerful and passionate person who really cares. I recommend and stand by Mrs. Story for School Board. Vote!!!

From Colleagues

"The City of Suffolk and its schools will be more than lucky to have a former educator of Mrs. Story's caliber as a member of the School Board. Her decades of teaching experience at various levels and districts, has allowed her to understand the current climate in schools, and given her the chance to formulate ideas about how to institute real change. As a passionate educator she has earned the respect and love of both her peers and her students. We are excited that she has the opportunity to advocate for education in a different capacity. As a former colleague  for  many years, I will miss seeing her in the halls of King's Fork High School. However, I cannot wait to see what innovations and challenges she brings to the district by serving as a member of the School Board. "

From Professors

"I educate future teachers, and I hope that my students will strive to become the kind of educator that Sherri Story has been. She is committed to excellence, accountability, and high standards, and I know that she will continue to work tirelessly for the Suffolk Public Schools when she is elected to the School Board. I cannot imagine a more qualified candidate."
