Meeting Overviews

Most of the Suffolk School Board meetings are held in the Suffolk City Hall.   We meet for the vital task of educating our future generation!

They want to learn.

They need to learn.

It is our NUMBER ONE job.

Meeting Reflections

Students reflect on decisions the school board make because it effects their education and future.   We need to equip students for trades, for security, for technology, for college required professions, ... for life!

They want to learn

They need to learn

It is our NUMBER ONE job.

School Board Meeting

My second school board meeting.  Student Achievement.

We also discussed   some of the budget items of concern. ores.  These scores generated a robust discussion between the board and administration regarding the intent of testing.    If these first 9 wk. tests are 'diagnostic' in intent, then the 2nd nine week scores  should be based on content learned.

We also discussed some of the budget items of concern.

I do not agree with spending money on Teaching Assistants to watch over the OSS (Out of School Suspension) students that would be  put back into another school 'somewhere' to do work on school virtually.

My opinion on this is that this money, 87K,  could be better spent in so many other places for the benefit of students who are behaving in school. I see needs for more engineering projects, projects that need to be integrated in our students' course of study.  This requires funding.

STEM  or STEAM.  Has been the money allocated to these classes?

It is the board's job of oversight to see that our teachers have the necessary funds to carry out the curriculum.  So, I have requested  to see the money allocated into instructional accounts,  by the principals of the middle schools and high schools,  as of Dec. 31st, 2018.

ACADEMICS!   This is what we are to be about.  Yes?

A "Budget Work Meeting"

This meeting was called to 'work on the budget.'  At least that is what I inferred from the title, "Budget Work Metg."

The first half an hour we received a beautiful power point presentation describing the source of school funding.  This was given by our CFO, Ms Forsman.

The next hafl an hour was something I wasn't expecting!  The floor was opened by asking for everyone's 'wish list'.

Was this going to be the agenda for 'working on the budget?'  I was confounded.   I felt like someone had trivialized such an important task by  asking us  for something akin to a Santa list.

Finances have a direct correlation to student achievement and employee morale.  Frivolous 'wish lists' have no place in such series business, especially in a school district that lags behind in student achievement.

My Opinion.

Jan. School Board Meeting

My first.

The new members of the school board were  getting used to the various agendas and all the related paperwork.  After this first meeting, most of it will all be appearing online for us in a School Board software program.    Great idea!

We were issued Chrome books and our seats were assigned by the clerk.  Having four new members out of seven was interesting.   I felt like there had probably  been some communication between certain members before this first meeting.

Lacking any orientation prior to being seated was like being thrown into the deep end of a swimming pool.  I want to ask questions so that as a Board member, I'm informed and am able to make better decisions when the time comes.  However, I know this was not the norm with the last board.  Asking questions seems to be some kind of betrayal .... to someone.  I always wondered when I attended board meetings as a teacher why the school board members never asked questions.  I still wonder.

aB Member David Mitnick asked the board to discuss the energy  performance plan.  I was hoping for a open and honest discussion, but that didn't happen.      I look forward to the new board  being able to engage open discussions at board meetings so the community can know and understand our thinking and reasoning.

Just my impression.

Organizational Meeting of the Board

At the organizational meeting, the board elected Phyllis Byrum Chairperson and Judith Brooks-Buck Vice Chair.

Committee appointments were made.  However, the procedure for doing so was a bit chaotic since the board had never written any policies for assigning board members to the committees and some of the rules as to how many and who could be on the committees were not in writing also.
